Sutton History
Construction of the "New School"
In 1958, during a period of significant growth in the Arkansas River Valley, the "New School" was completed at a cost of $326,550, primarily funded by PL 815 federal monies. The building featured 16 classrooms, with one wing dedicated specifically to 1st and 2nd grades. Its state-of-the-art heating and ventilation systems ensured a constant flow of fresh air, and the walls were painted a calming green, believed to enhance concentration and learning.
Naming of Sutton Elementary
Sutton Elementary was named in honor of Doss Sutton, who generously donated land to the Fort Smith Public Schools. The district recognized Mr. Sutton's contribution by naming the new school after him as a tribute to his generosity.
